Biodiversity in a beaver's territory is particularly rich, as the beaver provides a diversity of habitats and structures for various animal and plant species (including birds, bats, amphibians, fish, reptiles, dragonflies and aquatic plants) through its damming constructions that shape the landscape. The beaver is therefore a key species for biodiversity.
In large construction projects, environmental planning, environmental monitoring and environmental control are important. Biodiversity plays an essential role. For example, CSD ENGINEERS was recently involved in a project to extend the national railway's double track between Trübbach and Buchs (in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland) as environmental planner and can now also carry out the construction monitoring and environmental follow-up. As part of this project, a railway trench was relocated in which beaver activity is known to occur. Before the start of the trench excavation work, a replacement beaver den made of natural materials was constructed in collaboration with the game warden. The beaver was not deterred by the work. It stayed in the area and found its way to the replacement den a few days later. An installed camera proved that the beaver had already spent the night in the new den.
The beaver is not the only one to benefit from our work. Many other animal and plant species also benefit. For more information on our biodiversity promotion services, see our Biodiversity promotion page.
